NASA scientists have said finding habitable worlds in the universe is a possibility in the next 20 years. During a panel discussion at NASA’s headquarters in Washington, D.C., on Monday, several of the space agency’s experts said based on advances in space telescope technology, finding alien life may become a reality.

“Many scientists believe we are not alone in the universe,” NASA says on its website. “It’s probable, they say, that life could have arisen on at least some of the billions of planets thought to exist in our galaxy alone – just as it did here on planet Earth. This basic question about our place in the Universe is one that may be answered by scientific investigations.”

Here’s what a few experts had to say about the topic during the discussion and on NASA’s website:

“I think in the next 20 years we will find out we are not alone in the universe.” – NASA astronomer Kevin Hand

“It’s highly improbable in the limitless vastness of the universe that we humans stand alone.” – NASA Administrator Charles Bolden

“Sometime in the near future, people will be able to point to a star and say, ‘that star has a planet like Earth.’ Astronomers think it is very likely that every single star in our Milky Way galaxy has at least one planet.” Sara Seager, professor of planetary science and physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology

  1. Of course, if there were biological creatures out there like on earth, one might wonder if Hashem has also made one that is intelligent and thus probably must be a higher life form with G-d being worshiped. Since I do not think that Hashem would need to create Torah for a different world, I will profess I think there is no such life out there much at all and clearly not one to be considered like a human being. If so, its for us to find in the millenia ahead. But really, who thinks this is really that important? Silly.

  2. The whole point of NASAis to prove that humans and earth is not the center of the world. They want us to believe that “planet Earth” is just another one amongst other planets where there is life. As Torah Jews we are to believe that humans are the “tachlis” of all the constellations and planets and solar systems. And that Earth is the center of the universe. Tanach and Chazal are full of this idea.

  3. The Chesed LAvraham describes different types of shedim, and one type sounds a lot like the classic grey alien – probably what most people think are aliens are really demons

  4. The Gemara says that in Sefer Shoftim it curses Meroz and the inhabitants of Meroz, the Gemara in Chagigah says Meroz is a star or planet

  5. Rabbi Aryeh Kaplan, ZT”L wrote on this subject. His basic premise was that if it was somehow necessary to facilitate the giving of the Torah on Har Sinai, then there is no conflict or shock.
