President Donald Trump appeared Monday to water down shock plans for an immediate pullout of US troops from Syria, saying he would consider a slower process for the removal of troops from the volatile region.
“Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told reporters in Brazil on Monday that he had asked Trump for a gradual withdrawal of troops. A senior political source told Haaretz that Netanyahu reportedly claimed that request is being considered “positively” by the White House.
Trump announced his Syria pullout by saying “We’ve won against ISIS,” even though thousands of the group’s fighters are thought to remain in Syria after the collapse of their “caliphate.”
