netanyahuBibi says that claims he ate treif are, well, not so kosher.

“I have never eaten non-kosher food,” Israeli Prime Minister Binyanin Netanyahu told Channel 2 television in an interview recorded before Yom Kippur. He was hinting that while he has sat in restaurants that serve treife food, he never ate the food himself.

Netanyahu, Arutz Sheva reported, insisted that he never eats treife food, and that this is true for himself as a private individual and not just in his official function. “I have kashrut supervisors at my side in this matter,” he said, apparently hinting at his wife, Sarah.

Some people had been upset, Arutz Sheva stated, after it was reported that Netanyahu had dined at a non-kosher restaurant in a dinner-date with casino magnate Sheldon Adelson. Sites were then doubly upset this past week when it was revealed that after dining on treif delicacies for lunch at Fresco by Scotto, a non-kosher Manhattan Italian restaurant, Netanyahu went to Manhattan lobster and crab joint Chart House.

  1. I have eaten at many business functions that treif. Firstly, one can generally eat fresh uncut fruit or fruit cut with a fresh knife. Secondly, my Rosh Yeshiva told me that his mesorah allowed eating well washed vegetable salad in the US when faced with tough situations. I know this isn’t common, and he didn’t shout this psak from the rooftops, but he is a well know chashuva Rav who gave me this psak for business meetings where I had no choice.

Lastly, I have been at major business dinners where they order food from kosher establishments and it comes double wrapped and sealed, on china and all. Its actually very common on NY and all most high ends restaurants know the drill.

Its motsei yom Kippur. Let’s be Dan lkaf zechus.

  2. If one doesn’t learn and know the halachos it’s impossible to keep kosher. has he ever asked a shiolah to a rav , probably not!!! i wouldn’t eat in his kitchen.

  3. I have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you. If you pay cash, I wont charge you tax.

  4. Isn’t Mr. Sheldon Adelson shomer Shabbos? Why would he be eating in a treif restaurant? Whether or not his politics and/or businesses are kosher, he does wear a yarmulke.

  5. Reply to comment 6: He has a daughter who is married to a frum man. Rav Nebenzal was the sandek at their son’s bris.

  6. the President of Israel can not request a kosher restaurant where he can eat meat as it’s appropriate for a head of state at an official meal? He must go to some treif place like a poor yid in the middle of nowherenessland, whose his boss brings him out to a treif establishment, where the poor yid will have to watch the rest of the party enjoy their tasty-looking nonkosher food — while he has a glass of mineral water or perhaps an orange or a banana?

    Please……

  7. To all those who eat vegetables, or just sit and don’t eat, at non-kosher establishments, Question, have you ever considered or discussed with your Rav, the Halochos of “Maris Ayin”?

  8. During a state visit to Poland in June, Jewish community members said they witnessed Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and other government officials eat non-kosher food – and the community is very angry and upset at the Prime Minister’s behavior.

Two months after the visit by Netanyahu and his ministers, members of the community told Arutz Sheva that Netanyahu’s eating non-kosher was perhaps the death blow to their efforts to prevent the Polish government from banning shechita, Jewish ritual slaughter – an effort that failed, when the government in Warsaw several weeks ago banned Jewish and Muslim ritual slaughter.

“We offered Netanyahu and his retinue kosher food, but they refused it,” the community officials told Arutz Sheva. “We are in a daily fight to ensure that Jews in this country can live a Jewish life. Only recently the government and courts here banned shechita. We would have expected Netanyahu to eat kosher and to impress upon the Poles how important keeping kosher is to Jews.

“How could he do such a thing when we were battling to be allowed to continue to produce kosher meat here?,” the officials asked.

In should be noted that several members of the delegation that traveled with Netanyahu, who themselves are observant, asked for and got kosher food.

The Prime Minister’s Office had no comment, a spokesperson told Arutz Sheva.

  9. I have a few questions to #3:
    1. Eating salads could be more treif than chazer. Eating a whole insect is worse than eating part of a treif animal. And it’s hard to believe that any treif restaurant would check their lettuce to our kashrus standards.
    2. What about a knife if they sliced an onion for the salad? That would also make it treif.
    3. What about the salad dressings?
It would be hard to believe it’s exactly as you say it, unless there is more to the leniency that you did not mention.

  10. #6 Bibi’s son was (is?) dating a Norwegian not a Swede. R”L
ALL Israeli MKs, diplomats and officials should be eating kosher wherever they go. Whether they like it or not, they represent klal Yisrael and the world judges all of us by their actions.

  11. There are ways to avoid shaylo . When my Rosh Yeshiva told me I could eat vegetable salad it was without dressing, without onions and cut with a clean knife.

Maris ayin is a specific hallacha, not a broad principle. Knowing when and how to apply hallacha is why we have rabbanim. When in doubt , ask your Rav. My point isnt that this psak is for everyone, but that we should be dan lkaf zechis that a Jew who says he is keeping kosher is telling the truth. Halivay all Jews wanted to keep kosher.

  12. Wait a minute! NYC has many genuinely kosher top notch restaurants, fit for any elite Jew. And these two couldn’t find their way into one?
