netanyahuIsraeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu came under heavy fire from his right-wing constituency and member of his own Likud Party this week after suggesting he was ready to uproot more Jews from the biblical Land of Israel in the name of “peace.”

In a nationally-broadcast Knesset speech on Monday, Netanyahu laid out the main points of the peace proposal he will present when he addresses the US Congress next week.

Netanyahu stated that he will not relinquish the large Jewish settlement blocs in Judea and Samaria, but said he was prepared to offer “painful compromises” that will require uprooting Jews living in more isolated communities throughout the biblical heartland.

“These compromises are painful, because we are talking about parts of our homeland. It’s not a foreign country. It is the land of our forefathers and we have historical rights here, and not just security interests,” Netanyahu continued.

Deputy Prime Minister Moshe Ya’alon responded on Tuesday, saying Netanyahu is mistaken if he believes a small military presence in areas like the Jordan Valley are enough to ensure Israel’s security.

Speaking at a conference highlighting Jewish agricultural success in the Jordan Valley, Ya’alon, a former Israeli army chief, explained that Israel won’t be able to maintain long-term security in any area where Jews don’t live.

Transportation Minister Israel Katz said the evacuation Netanyahu is prepared to offer would be the largest single displacement of Jews since the Spanish Inquisition, and would dwarf the Gaza pullout.

Danny Dayan, head of the council that oversees Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria, told Israel National News that Netanyahu is now caving to international pressure, and betraying even simple security truths that the prime minister is well aware of.

For instance, Dayan noted that “settlement blocs alone are not enough. For security, we require control over the mountain ridge, the entire Jordan Valley, and the areas that overlook Ben Gurion Airport.”

Despite Netanyahu’s readiness to compromise and meet key Arab demands, top Palestinian Authority negotiator Saeb Erekat declared that Israel is not a true peace partner because Netanyahu did not surrender to all Arab demands.

“I believe negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians are over,” Erekat told a gathering of Palestinian and extreme left-wing Israeli activists on Monday night.

The Palestinians demand that in addition to uprooting hundreds of small Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria, Israel must also hand over half of Jerusalem and open its borders to millions of foreign-born Arabs claiming refugee status.

In his Knesset speech, Netanyahu rejected those demands, and pointed out that the root of the Israeli Arab conflict is not 1967, the year Israel gained control of Judea and Samaria, but rather 1948, the year the Arab world tried to snuff out the nascent Jewish state.

Netanyahu said the real problem is the decades-old Arab refusal to recognize Israel’s right to exist as the national home of the Jewish people.

  1. How do you negotiate with people who hate your existence, don’t recognize your humanity, can’t follow logic, and can’t admit to their own fallacies? The product of such negotiations will in time be buried under a new avalanche of amnesia and distortions. Our peace treaty with Egypt today is headed for the garbage bin of history, because it was two men trying to make peace and not two nations. As long as hate and historic revisionism continue to rage, we have no partner.

  2. With all our heartfelt emotions, I don’t think any of us would want to be in Netanyahu’s shoes right now.

Previous prime ministers would have agreed to all of the Arab’s demands, at least the territorial ones, and while I too was hoping that he would refrain from any and all withdrawals, I think he does deserve credit for dealing with the pressure as well as he is.

He may also be bluffing in order to placate the Obama administration – in case any of you are not aware, we do not manufacture fighter planes such as F-15’s and F-16’s – we are dependent on the U.S. for those, among other weaponry. He may be bluffing – offering a deal to demonstrate good will, while knowing full well that he won’t have to deliver because the Palestinians will never take him up on it.

But what we all need to realize – especially those of us who are zocheh to be shomrei Torah u’mitzvos – is that the only thing that will get us out of this mess is for us to do teshuvah, to realize once and for all that we cannot rely on any politician -no matter how well-intentioned – and that we must daven to HKB”H with all our might and all our hearts that He take us out of this galus.

The geulah shleimah is the only way out:
    Eis tzarah l’Yaakov, u’mimenah yivosheia!

  3. What Netanyahu did was astounding.
aND YET THERE IS BARELY A MENTION OF ANYTHING FROM the Republicans, the Jewish Republican Coalition, or the rest of the Likud.

Netanyahu actually criticiszed Labor and Kadima for doing concessions outside of negotiations for years. He gave up something without being at the negotiating table.

Yet the republicans and the Jewish republican coalition is not to be heard from?

    Why?

Same reason that whenever the Likud, or Ariel Sharon, or George Bush does something called
” concession” it is not seriously criticized if at all by them.

But if Obama calls for it the response is a barrage of claims that he is trying to destroy the Jewish State.

Why? Because whenever it is criticized by Republicans or the Republican Jewish Coaltion it is to be criticised because it was not done by the Republicans or by George Bush or by the Likud.

So Netanyahu gives up all settlements that are not in the 3 blocks prior to negotiations ONLY 4 MONTHS BEFORE THE PALESTINIANS GET A 2/3 VOTE IN THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY FOR A PALESTINIAN STATE with NO PEACE CONCESSIONS FOR ISRAEL, AND PROBABLY ISRAEL WILL STILL HAVE TO PAY THE MILLIONs THEY PAY IN FUNDING THE MILITARY Control.

SO WHAT IS GOING ON HERE?

  4. Do any of you realize we are talking about 100,000 Jewish men, women and children?
Communities with shuls, yeshivos, beit medreshrashim, fields that observe shmittah, vineyards that we use its heilge grapes for wine. This is a COLOSSAL TRAGEDY.
WE R AT FAULT, every generation receives the leaders that hashem feels we have merited. These are ours for now….
Likud, Kadima, UTJ, Shas, Meretz – they are all just names. Uprooting Jews is a averah gamar.

  5. Look, at least the bright side is that Bibi is finally adopting the Chareidi position that there should be no State of Israel, and that the Arabs should be in control. Imagine, no more of that pesky Hatikvah or Yom Haatzmaut business which so annoys the frum.

I guess this makes him a Baal Teshuva.

  6. Finally Netanyahu is beginning to acknowledge reality. Too bad he didn’t do it earlier when he could have driven a harder bargain. Now, with unilateral Palestinian statehood about to happen, he has no choice. Israel doesn’t live on a self-sufficient island. It’s tied in economically with the whole world and politically with the US, the Middle East and Europe. Netanyahu has finally admitted that he has to pay attention to people outside his voting block.

The question now is, how much damage control he can do after September, when the heads-in-the-sand policies of the right-wing are finally shown to be suicidal.

  7. as a big defender of israel I think we should rush to conclusion and really work with the Palestinians to reach a settlement with the Palestinians and not flat out reject every offer the Palestinians give.

  9. Chaim, the president just said that it is reasonable for Israel not to negotiate with people unwilling to accept her existence.

I’m not a Dr. Laura fan but I do remember this nugget from my limited listening: “you can give the joker another chance after he’s proven himself changed, for an extended period of time.”
