Netanyahu Rivals Gantz, Lapid Announce Merger, Aim For Israel Election Victory

Two of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s top political rivals announced early Thursday morning an agreement to run a on a joint ticket in April’s general elections as they vie to depose the long-serving incumbent.

The widely anticipated merger between former IDF chief of staff Benny Gantz and former Finance Minister Yair Lapid came just hours before a 10:00 p.m. deadline for parties to finalize their electoral lists, and follows weeks of speculation as to the possibility of a centrist bloc with the running power to challenge Netanyahu’s stalwart right-wing camp.

A statement issued by Gantz’s Israel Resilience and Lapid’d Yesh Atid parties said that Lt. General (res.) Gabi Ashkenazi, who was Gantz’s predecessor as IDF chief of staff, will also join the joint ticket which already includes yet another general — former Defense Minister and IDF chief Moshe ‘Bogie’ Ya’alon.
