netanyahu2Israeli Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu said he was heavily grieved by the news of the petirah of Chacham Ovadiah Yosef zt”l, whom he called “one of the greatest religious legislators of our generation.”

“Rav Ovadia was a giant in Torah and halacha, and a guide for multitudes,” he said in a statement. “I admired his amiable personality and his direct approach. In my meetings with him I was always made wiser and learned something. The people of Israel have lost one of the wisest people of the generation. I send my condolences to his family, to his students, and his followers.”

Later, Netanyahu said, “This is a great loss to the people of Israel. I am thinking of the chain of the generations, of the Geonim of Babylonia and Spain. I mentioned Rav Yosef Karo – he is a link in the chain of the love of the Torah and the people of Israel. He went where others didn’t have the courage to go, like Nachshon he led the camp. It’s a great loss to the people of Israel and to its spirit which he represented,” Netanyahu said.

  1. You can’t describe someone as a giant in Torah and Halachah if you have no concept of what they mean. It is like an illiterate person saying that Einstein was a great physicist. He has no right to even make that statement. Especially that you are quoting a mechallel shabbos ochel nevelos uterefos shekatzim veramasim. I don’t care if he is the prime minister. It is a total insult to Chacham Ovadia Zatzal to even print these words.

  2. Nat, if Netanyahu would let this go by with no recognition, or worse, recognition of Rav Yosef, zt”l exclusively from a political perspective, that would have been much worse.
Why can’t we just accept the possibility that there’s [more than] a pintele yid lurking in the PM’s soul…

  3. I didn’t say that he shouldn’t mourn him from a political perspective. Just don’t call him a giant in Torah and Halachah when you spit and trample on both of those.

  4. Nat why do you have to stir up machlokes and look only at the bad in people- when we have just lost a godol b’Torah. is this a way to respect a leaders memory.

I guess only Talmidei Chachomim have the right to be machshiv Torah, simple people and sinners have no right to ever respect Torah (sarcasm)

  5. no one is stirring up machlokes, and yes, people that do not respect Torah do not respect Torah, as you yourself have just said.

  6. Thanks NAT.

I am blessed to know you are ready to fight against the whole Jewish nation for who “deserves to discuss Torah” more. Thanks for playing “I am not ready for Eternity”. Baruch Hashem.
