idfA new navigation service for cellphones helps Arabs in Judea and Samaria bypass IDF checkpoints, including surprise roadblocks. The service provides the locations of the roadblocks also suggests alternative routes for sneaking past them.

The application has reportedly become a hit among Palestinian Authority Arabs.

The service was developed by a PA-based start-up company, FeAzma. It is not location-based because most PA Arabs do not possess smart phones. It operates by a system similar to that used by existing Global Positioning System (GPS) devices, but relies on text messages to relay information to and from users.

Drivers and passengers can update other users about roadblocks that they encounter, and the result is something like a drivers’ social network.

FeAzma founding partner, Hamam A-Samara, presented the product recently in the StartUp Weekend event organized by technology website Newsgeek and held at the Peres Center for Peace. The three-day long event brought together PA and Israeli entrepreneurs who presented new ideas.

A-Samara told the Mako news site that the product is still under development and there is more work to be done before we can officially launch it.”

The IDF’s official response to a query by Arutz Sheva on the report was: “We have no comment on this matter.”
