New Bloomberg Ban: No Two Liter Sodas With Pizza

pizzaTake a big gulp, New York: Hizzoner is about to give you a pop.

Nanny Bloomberg unleashes his ban on large sodas on March 12 – and there are some nasty surprises lurking for hardworking families.

Say goodbye to that 2-liter bottle of Coke with your pizza delivery, pitchers of soft drinks at your kid’s birthday party and some bottle-service mixers at your favorite nightclub.

They’d violate Mayor Bloomberg’s new rules, which prohibit eateries from serving or selling sugary drinks in containers larger than 16 ounces.

Bloomberg’s soda smackdown follows his attacks on salt, sugar, trans fat, smoking and even baby formula.

The city Health Department last week began sending brochures to businesses that would be affected by the latest ban, including restaurants, bars and any “food service” establishment subject to letter grades.

And merchants were shocked to see the broad sweep of the new rules.

And consumers, especially families, will soon see how the rules will affect their wallets – forcing them to pay higher unit prices for smaller bottles.

Typically, a pizzeria charges $3 for a 2-liter bottle of Coke. But under the ban, customers would have to buy six 12-ounce cans at a total cost of $7.50 to get an equivalent amount of soda.

The smaller bottles will generate more revenue for the restaurant but cost consumers more.

It will also trash more plastic into the environment.

Deliveryman Philippe Daniba said he had brought countless 2-liter bottles of soda to customers over his 19 years at the restaurant. The ban, he said, “doesn’t make sense.”

Industry-group officials agreed.

“It’s ludicrous,” said Robert Bookman, a lawyer for the New York City Hospitality Alliance. “It’s a sealed bottle of soda you can buy in the supermarket. Why can’t they deliver what you can get in the supermarket?”

Families will get pinched at kid-friendly party places, which will have to chuck their plastic pitchers because most hold 60 ounces – even though such containers are clearly intended for more than one person.

  1. I really thought this was sometype of Purim joke, but I am saddened to learn it isn’t!!!! What nonsense NYers have to put up with. When will it end.

  2. The inside scoop
Pizzarias and fast food operators will be obligated to have scales and blood pressure machines and each customer will have to be weighed and pressure tested before their order processed. This would have been already proposed only because of a processing glitch – namely how to deal with home delivery customers and the subsequent 1,000% expected increase in home delivery oddest once this me Bloomberg law takes effect – has the whole procedure been put off for now!! This Bloomberg is hoping to win the international Nanny Award in 2013.

  3. listen to me Mr Mayor loud and clear MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS YOU ARE NOT MY MOM, MY DAD, MY DOC OR ME! LET ME DECIDE WHAT AND HOW MUCH I WANT TO EAT! THANK YOU.

  4. that pizza looks really good….mayb they should ban pizza cuz u dont go to resutraunt for soda but for pizza if there was no pizza you probably wouldnt go for soda, sushi is bad cuz maybe theyll fry it. milk is bad…ice cream…fruits are bad…juice….everything is bad lets just get IVs and be skinny

  5. So soon after Sandy revealed his administration’s utter failure to plan for weather catastrophes, the Mayor is still meddling with people’s diets. Many New Yorkers with storm-damaged property are struggling today, which should get his attention.

  6. hes a rushah and Communist i dont understand what hes trying to do enough already hes really crazy all he likes to do is stop people from what they want to do. also how come no other mayors in the world r doin this hes the only smart one? watch out because the next thing he may do is ban takeout stores

  7. If you give your kids Coke or Pepsi to drink, you are one bad parent. If you drink it yourself, you need your head examined. Soda isn’t food – anti-food is more like it. Put a nail in a glass of Coke. It’ll dissolve in a couple of days. Want to polish a penny till it’s shiny? Put it in a glass of coke. You want that stuff in your stomach? Think I’m joking? I tried both experiments when I was a kid, and it’s amazing that after 50+ years people are still drinking metal polish.

  8. why dont u start fighting crime you have one of the worst rates in the country in brkln instead of changing how we eat i dont think this is why government was implemented

  9. What has happened here? Are you all still so inebriated from Purim that you cannot think straight? What is wrong with your yiddishe kopfen?

The solution is quite simple: f the store can not or will not sell you one 2-liter bottle just ask for two 1-liter bottles.

    Fertig!

  10. Haha maybe he should make it compulsory for pizza delivery people to carry a scale, and refuse sale to customers that are already intoxicated, oops, overweight. Next step will be limiting the sale of gasoline to overweight NYC drivers, they should walk instead. Is there an IGNobel award for politics, I wonder.

  12. hey 13 yes its unhealthy but that is a parents decision not the government he has no right to say what we can eat its that simple if they want to help with obesity…education not restriction…u always know which kids have candy in their house when they come over to play those with candy eat a normal amount the kids who are restricted eat an abnormal amount
