Page of Talmud

The Toronto community will welcome a new full-time kollel this Elul.

Toronto has a long history of successful Kollelim and mekomos haTorah.

In 1970, the Toronto Community Kollel, known as Kollel Avreichim, was established and led by Rav Yaakov Michoel Hirschmann and Rav Shlomo Eliyohu Miller, both talmidim of Rav Ahron Kotler zt”l. This was the first Kollel ever founded in Toronto, and its founder was the late R’ Moshe Reichmann zt”l. It was the first kollel founded in North America. Under the auspices of these two Torah leaders, the Toronto Kollel has flourished and is flourishing until this day.

Subsequently, other kollelim in Toronto have been established over the years, including Kollel Oholei Yom Tov, under the leadership of Rav Yisroel Bollag. Rav Bollag is a Talmid Muvhak of Rav Elya Ber Wachtfogel. As well, a kollel was founded in the Thornhill area of Toronto, and that kollel as well has seen much hatzlocha under the leadership of its rosh kollel, Rav Mordechai Scheiner. Rav Scheiner is a Talmid of the Toronto Kollel.

Toronto is home to several mesivtos and yeshivos. .

Yeshivas Nachalas Tzvi, founded in 1990, is a successful Mesivta under the auspices of its Rosh Yeshiva, Rav Yitzchok Tzvi Kaplan. Its late Rosh Yeshiva of Nachalas Tzvi, Rav Dovid Kaplan zt”l, was himself a talmid of Rav Ahron Kotler; he passed away several years ago.

Another notable Makom Torah is Yeshivas Ner Yisroel in Thornhill, Ontario, which was founded in the 1960s by Mr. Sandy Hofsteder and Mr. Avraham Bleeman. Yeshivas Ner Yisroel is comprised of a mesivta and a bais medrash, under the leadership of Rav Meir Dovid Greenberger and Rav Uri Shraga Mayerfeld. Rav Mayerfeld is a talmid of Rav Elya Svei zt”l, as well as Rav Berel Soloveitzik in Yeshivas Brisk. Rav Greenberger is a talmid of the late roshei yeshiva of Yeshivas Telshe Cleveland.

Toronto is home to a Yeshiva Gedolah and Mesivta founded by the late R’ Moshe Reichmann z”l, in 1988. Under the leadership of its Rosh Yeshiva, Rav Chaim Mendel Brodsky, Yeshiva Gedolah Zichron Shmayahu of Toronto has produced talmidim for close to 30 years in Toronto. The Yeshiva has attracted many bochurim from Toronto and the United States.

Rav Brodsky was a R”M at Yeshivas Mir in Yerushalayim beforehand, delivering daily shiurim beginning in 1979, succeeding his father-in-law, Rav Nochum Partzovitz zt”l, Rosh Yeshivas Mir.

The Board of Directors of the Yeshiva have wished to open a kollel near the yeshiva for about twenty years now. Now, with much siyata dishmaya, a community kollel is being founded this Elul, comprised of several elite yungeleit. The kollel will be led by its Rosh kollel, Rav Yeruchom Brodsky.

  1. Please supply further details…..
    Who are the yungerleit…….
    Where is this Kollel being…….
I’m curious like so many others

  2. Allow me to correct you a on the first kollel in morth america.

While i cannot speak to kollelim in tbe US, actually, the first kollel in canada was founded by the late Rav Avrohom Edery ZTL, a talmid if Rav Aharon Kotler, and to quote Rav Elya Ber Vachtfogel, ‘the biggest masmid in the whole yeshiva’ (that is a verbatim quote). The kollel was founded in the late 1960’s in Montreal, and it rented space within the Beis Rivka school in the Snowdon Area. I know, i was there.

  3. This article is incorrect. The first kollel in canada was started by harav avrohom edery ztl, a talmid of rav aharon, in Montreal, in the late 60’s.

  4. To Thinking:
It will be inside the existing Yeshiva bldg, which isn’t filled to capacity.
It will initially be comprised of 8 alumni metzuyanim yungleit, a number relocating from Lakewood.

  5. Btw the Yeshiva IS full to capacity. The Administartion of the Yeshiva rented two trailers for shiur-rooms for the coming year…….

  7. To Jew who commented: The Kollel will have its own night Seder and Shabbos minyonim at a different location (not on Yeshiva premises).

  8. I read this article about three-four times!
It excites me every time I read it. Something I’ve never experienced before in my lifetime.
