empire-state-buildingFor just an hour, the city that never sleeps turned off the lights last night. Top landmarks, including the Empire State Building and the Brooklyn Bridge, went dark from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. in honor of Earth Hour.

The hour, recognized across the globe, is part of an initiative to highlight the impact of climate change.

“It’s going to send the right message to the world that if NY can do it, anyone can do it,” said Sourabh Banerjee, 29, of Manhattan, standing near the Empire State Building.

From Beijing to Berlin and beyond, people in some 4,000 cities switched off their lights to reduce energy consumption.

The fourth annual Earth Hour was organized by the World Wildlife Fund.
