New York Times Lost in Yiddish Translation: ‘Yentas Are Busybodies, Not Matchmakers’

The New York Times issued a comical correction on Sunday over the misuse of the Yiddish word “yenta” in an article about a Jewish dating app.

“An earlier version of this article and its accompanying headline incorrectly compared JSwipe users to yentas. Yentas are busybodies, not matchmakers,” read the correction.

The article published on March 13 was headlined “For Nice Jewish Guys, Swipe Right” and focused on the Jewish dating app JSwipe, which allows users to swipe right or left on their screen to approve or deny a potential match.

The New York Times also admitted misusing the term “shiva” in the story. The correction read, “An earlier version of this article described incorrectly what Jordan Rodman was doing at a shiva. She was paying her respects to a family in mourning; she herself was not sitting shiva.”
