New York City will acknowledge its former role as a major center of the slave trade in the 1700s with a historical marker on Wall Street. “The slaves of that time and place helped build City Hall,” City Councilman Jumaane Williams said. “Their lives should be celebrated and their deaths should be mourned.”

The sign will likely be unveiled on Juneteenth (June 19), a holiday commemorating the Emancipation Proclamation that abolished slavery during the Civil War. Read more at WNYC.

  1. I knew this was coming! Next step is reparations! We, evil white racist males, will now be punished for the evils perpetrated back in the 1700’s!

  2. Such explicit mention of names of ads is wrong to Kosher audience who may not know of it especially detailing a referenced similar ad. Your readership deserves better for a frum website.

They got the wrong date. Slavery in the United States did not end until December 18, 1865 with the announcement of the ratification of the 13th Amendment, which freed the remaining enslaved people in Kentucky (thousands), Delaware (hundreds) and New Jersey (16).

  4. When will authorities put up similar signage in Egypt recognizing the slave labor that build those ancient cities?
That happened prior to the black slaves in the U.S.
