Nigeria’s defense chief delivered frustrating news for the families of the nearly 300 schoolgirls who were kidnapped by Boko Haram and have been missing for about six weeks. Air Marshal Alex Badeh said the government has located the missing girls, but it could not take the risk of using force to rescue them.
“Where they are held, can we go there with force? We can’t kill our girls in the name of trying to get them back,” he said.
But the government doesn’t want to negotiate to get them back either. President Goodluck Jonathan reportedly said no to a deal to exchange 50 of the abducted girls for 100 Boko Haram prisoners.
The Boko Haram war continued Monday as 54 people were killed, including 24 soldiers and 21 policemen. Read more.

While the government dithers, the girls languish. How awful for them and their families. Nigeria should be ashamed of itself.

What would you suggest they do? There are only about 6 maybe 7 countries in the world that could possibly pull off a rescue without getting the vast majority – if not all – of the girls killed. Nigeria is not one of them.
And Pres. Jonathan is probably right for not being willing to negotiate. 100 prisoners for 50 girls? If he agrees to that, then the next time they’ll be asking for 150 or 200 prisoners for 50 girls – so that those released will be free to kidnap hundreds of other people, since the system worked so well the first time around.
