Israeli troops facing off against some 20,000 protesters killed nine Palestinians on Friday, as clashes erupted along the fraught Gaza border, just a week after a mass demonstration led to violence and the bloodiest day since a 2014 war.
Gaza’s health ministry also reported that 408 Palestinians had been taken to hospitals and medical centers for treatment. Palestinians burned mounds of tires and threw stones and Molotov cocktails at Israeli soldiers over the border fence, who responded with tear gas, water cannons and live fire. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said that several attempts were made to penetrate the border barrier, although none were successful.
Among the dead were journalist Yasser Murtaja, who was wearing a press vest when he was shot.
