After beginning to enforce Shabbos observance in Ashdod, secular protests pushed Mayor Yechiel Lasri to change policy.

He announced that a municipal bylaw requiring shops to close on Shabbos will no longer be enforced at the Big Fashion and Star Center malls, but only in grocery stores situated in religious areas or near shuls.

MK Tamar Zandberg of Meretz claimed this as a secular victory, hundreds of secular Jews demonstrated outside city hall despite the new policy. A leader of the protest told Haaretz that “residents are worried and they don’t understand the mayor’s changing versions.”
