yom-kippurJoseph Berger reports in the New York Times:

It will look like a scene out of a hospital ward.

In a basement room crowded with medical equipment, about 20 people at one time – sick, pregnant, frail and elderly, or on lifesaving medication – will be hooked up to intravenous drips on Wednesday to receive nutrients they need to get through the day.

The unlikely setting will be the main synagogue of the Bobov Hasidic sect, a cavernous house of worship in Borough Park, Brooklyn, that sets up hospital beds and intravenous drips in advance of the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur. The patients will be frail Orthodox Jews trying to make it, with a little boost, through a day of religiously required fasting.

  1. Hey Johnny Apple Tree! HaShem did! He give s’chaar and Siyaata DiShmaaya for those who wish to fulfill His mitzvos! They’re not talking about people who have a P’saak that they can not and should not fast, rather, they’re talking about people who may be feeling faint or worse and who need a drip rather than a hospital admission! Or of people, LIKE ME, for whom the dioctor has stated it is okay to fast yet if I’m feeling weak or dizzy to get the hydration drip and not try to push myself! Thankfully I did NOT need it this Yom Kippur but I went into the Yom Tov feeling secure that Bobov and/or Hatzaloh could hydrate me via my medi-port! So just sit back Mr. Apple Tree and address issues that you are knowledgeable in! And a Gut Yohr to you!
