Congressman Charlie Rangel may have had some slip of the tongue on Wednesday or didn’t manage to finish a sentence. But it seemed like he suggested Israel is asked to give up it’s entire promised land that she had acquired over 2000 years ago, if only it would bring peace and security to the region.

Speaking at a press conference in support of Israel and the families of the three abducted teens, Rep. Rangel sought to make the point that despite Israel’s requirement to give up territory in the West Bank in exchange for peace and security, the Palestinians have not followed through with providing security for the nation of Israel.

“But I do believe that if the giving back of this property would mean peace after 2000 years, if it will mean unity not just for this region but for the entire world, if it would mean that the United States of America would be more secure,” Rangel said, before switching to call on the Palestinians to “bring home our boys.”

The comments above are surprising given Rangel’s pro-Israel record and staunch support of Israel over the years. Moreover, suggesting at a solidarity rally Israel should give up land for peace while three of its boys are held in captivity is sort of out of place.

Rangel, a 22-term congressman, is fending off a competitive challenge by State Senator Adriano Espaillat and Pastor Mike Walrond. The Democratic primary is set for June 24.

JP reached out to the Rangel’s campaign for an explanation. We will updates our readers once we get a comment.

Below are Rep. Rangel’s transcribed remarks:

Years ago there used to be a commercial saying that you don’t have to be Jewish to love Levy’s rye bread. Well you don’t have to be Jewish to understand what its like for political reason to snatch and hold your children hostage. I don’t care what country you come from, that if you can see and talk to people who will stoop this low to prove a political point then you can see the credibility they would have on any issue…

I don’t know of anything in history where a small country, surrounded by its foes, has been attacked and succeeded to repel all of them and in the course of it has gained a lot of geographic territory, and then they are asked that they should give back this territory through this colonization of community enemies had attacked and lost. Well I’m not that good of a Christian to understand it, but I do believe that if the giving back of this property would mean peace after 2000 years, if it will mean unity not just for this region but for the entire world, if it would mean that the United States of America would be more secure because we know that the beacon of democracy in this part of America, not only our friends and partners but necessary for us to survive as a country that fights terrorism no matter what country they are in and so yes bring home our boys.”

  1. So the entire world has been at war for the past 2000 years just because the state of israel was founded on a small strip of land 70 years ago.

  2. WAIT A MINUTE , IS HE SAYING WHAT CHAZAL AND ALL OF OUR HOLY SAGES KEPT ON TELLING US .IS THIS WHAT HASHEM PROMISED US THAT WE ARE GOING TO GOT OUT OF AXILE WITH OUT PROMISSION .

  3. He should have been booted when he was convicted and “only” censured by congress.
If I had done ‘craames’ah would have in jail but Rangel just has to ‘crah’ a little, get a little scolding then gets re-eeelected!
He should have been dumped long ‘ego.’

  4. #3, ANN, first would like to suggest you learn to spell and then get your facts in order. And which ‘Chazal’ & holy sages are you talking about? We have the permission to come home to EY. Hashem used the Erev Rav to get us back there and their (ErevRav) time will soon be over. It’s all about leading us into the Geulah; all has been prophecied by our Neviim. Also, suggest you read KolHator by the Vilna Gaon. Start learning.
