nyc-bike-laneThe New York City Council is considering legislation to increase enforcement and fines on commercial bicyclists.

Stiff fines would be issued to bicycle delivery guys and their bosses for running red lights, pedaling in the wrong direction and riding on sidewalks, 1010 WINS’ John Montone reported.

The legislation would increase the current $100 fine for cyclists who don’t obey the traffic laws.

Officials are hoping the bill would make the sidewalks safer for pedestrians and are considering an educational program to teach delivery bikers and messengers the rules of the road.

One man told Montone he was hit in the back by a Chinese food deliveryman who was riding on the sidewalk while talking on his cell phone.

Another man said he was crossing the street one time and was almost clipped by a commercial cyclist who went through a red light.
