shalit2New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn along with other City Council members and Jewish leaders, including Malcolm Hoenlein, Executive Vice Chairman of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, will present a proclamation to Noam Shalit today, declaring Wednesday, September 7th, “Gilad Shalit Day” in New York City. Consul General of Israel in New York Ido Aharoni will also participate in the event.

Cpl. Gilad Shalit was kidnapped from within Israeli territory on June 25, 2006, as part of an unprovoked and well-planned attack by Hamas terrorists. During the course of the attack, two IDF soldiers were killed and five others were wounded.

As of today, in violation of international law, Gilad Shalit will have been held in total isolation with no access to the International Red Cross or other humanitarian bodies for nearly 1,900 days.

Son of Aviva and Noam Shalit, Gilad was 19 years old at the time of his abduction; he turned 26 years old on August 28th.
