New York Police Department officer Peter Liang has been reportedly found guilty of second degree manslaughter.
He shot and killed 28-year-old Akai Gurley in 2014 and was charged with manslaughter, assault, reckless endangerment, criminally negligent homicide and official misconduct.
Gurley was unarmed. He was killed when a ricocheting bullet fired from Liang’s gun hit him in the stairwell of the Louis H. Pink housing project in East New York, Brooklyn.
Gurley’s partner, Melissa Butler, testified during the trial that while she was trying to resuscitate Gurley, Liang did not help but just walked by.
Liang faces up to 15 years in prison on the manslaughter charge.
