New York Times reporter James Risen will not go to jail for refusing to reveal his sources after the Justice Department said Monday it would not compel him to testify at a leak trial.
Court filings revealed that Risen will not be called to testify against former CIA officer Jeffrey Sterling, who is charged with providing details about a botched operation in Iran. Risen testified last week that he had multiple sources who he refused to identify.
“Mr. Risen’s under-oath testimony has now laid to rest any doubt concerning whether he will ever disclose his source or sources for Chapter 9 of State of War (or, for that matter, anything else he’s written),” prosecutors said in court filings. “He will not. As a result, the government does not intend to call him as a witness at trial.” Read more at the New York Times.
