O’Reilly’s JFK Story Proven False

Chalk up another Bill O’Reilly exaggeration. In 1977, O’Reilly was a 28-year-old TV reporter in Texas investigating the assassination of John F. Kennedy. O’Reilly wrote in his 2012 book Killing Kennedy that he was knocking on the door of a CIA asset with ties to the Kennedys and the Oswalds when he heard the asset shoot himself to death.

Pretty dramatic, but it’s entirely false, says Jefferson Morley, a former Washington Post editor and author of JFK assassination book Our Man in Mexico.

O’Reilly is heard on phone calls obtained by Morley telling an investigator that he would fly to Florida from Texas the next day to cover the suicide.

O’Reilly on Tuesday threatened a New York Times reporter for writing about his false claim that he was “in a combat situation” during the Falklands War. Read more at JFK Facts.

  1. Why is O’Reilly still employed? Rather had his career end after just one fraud. I guess this proves what I have been saying for a long time: Facts are optional for right wingers.

  2. what is with matzav posing illegitimate stories, just because o reliy is a we should not get used to slandering people, especially with unfounded accusations

  3. Charlie Hall, shall I remind you of your Hillary and her combat experience “under sniper fire” story in Bosnia? Or that she has been named after Sir Edmund Hillary who became famous for being in the group that climbed Mt. Everest for the first time. Only that Sir Edmund climbed Mt. Everest five years after her birth. Matzav readers have got the impression that for Charlie Hall facts are irrelevant when facts do not reflect on the Obamas and Clintons of the world, i.e., our Charlie doesn’t care about emmes, but about politics and ideology.

  4. Chuck, you’re being petty. The event really occurred, whether OReilly was tgere or not. In Rather’s case, he made up the story out of whole cloth. And with the intention of influencing a presidential election, to boot.
