obamaPresident Barack Obama announced Monday that he is commuting the sentences of 46 prisoners. Most of the offenders had been sentenced for drug crimes, and would have been released already if they had been sentenced under current guidelines, which have reduced terms for nonviolent offenses, like crack possession.

“I am granting your application because you have demonstrated the potential to turn your life around,” Obama said in a letter. “Now it is up to you to make the most of this opportunity. It will not be easy, and you will confront many who doubt people with criminal records can change. Perhaps even you are unsure of how you will adjust to your new circumstances.”

This latest batch of commutations brings Obama’s total to nearly 90.

Meanwhile, Reb Shalom Mordechai ben Rivka Rubashkin remains languishing in prison.

  1. “their punishments didn’t fit the crime.”
“been sentenced to at least 20 years”
“most of them to non-violent offenders”
    “under outdated sentencing guidelines”

…and Sholom Mordichai ben Rivka fits all of the above categories except the one that’s not printed: his skin color.
    Ditto for Yonnason ben Malka!

  2. Now is the right time for Askanim to approach Obama on behalf of Rubashkin. If he can pardon drug dealers and other violent criminals, then he should certainly pardon Shalom Rubashkin.

  3. In regards to the writers comment on Reb Shalom Mordechai ben Rivka Rubashkin:

his sentence is a gross miscarriage of justice; and,

, the President should commute his sentence forthwith
