obama-smokingThe highest achieving member of Hawaii’s Choom Gang says Colorado’s and Washington’s marijuana experiments should continue. In a 16,000-word New Yorker profile, President Obama says the states’ legalization of marijuana – still verboten under federal law – should “go forward because it’s important for society not to have a situation in which a large portion of people have at one time or another broken the law and only a select few get punished.”

Obama was referring to vastly disproportional rates of prosecution and incarceration for drug crimes between whites and minorities.

  1. “vastly disproportional rates of prosecution and incarceration for drug crimes between whites and minorities.”

He is 100% right on this. Poor minority kids get jail time for marijuana in the Bronx. In Westchester, the white kids in the wealthy suburbs never get arrested!

The total number of persons in the history of humankind to die from the acute effects of marijuana appears to be zero. Cigarettes and alcohol are much more dangerous, and marijuana is useful for some medical conditions. There is no real reason it should remain illegal. Republican Joe Lhota was right on when he called for its legalization during his recent mayoral campaign, as were the great Conservative heroes of the past, William Buckley and Barry Goldwater.
