malaysian-prime-minister-najib-razak-and-us-president-barack-obamaPresident Barack Obama in a joint press conference with Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak said Sunday that both countries have issues with human rights that need to be addressed.

CBS News’ Major Garrett asked Obama why he had not discussed human rights with Najib and why he did not meet with jailed opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim.

“The fact that I haven’t met with Mr. Anwar is not indicative of a lack of concern,” Obama answered. “There are a lot of people I don’t meet with.”

National Security Adviser Susan Rice is scheduled to meet with Anwar Ibrahim when she visits the country this week, Red State reports.

Obama called Najib a “reformer” and said he always discusses human rights issues in his meetings with world leaders. He said he is committed to making sure such issues are raised in “a constructive way.”

“I think the Prime Minister is the first to acknowledge that Malaysia’s still got some work to do. Just like the United States, by the way, has some work to do on these issues,” Obama said. “Human Rights Watch probably has a list of things they think we should be doing as a government.”

  1. Hey Obama, YOU’VE got plenty of work to do yourself. Instead, when you are not playing golf, you look down your nose and lecture us.

From Amnesty International’s report on Malaysian Human Rights: The government tightened control of dissent and curtailed the right to freedom of expression and religion. Bloggers were arrested under the Sedition Act, and the Printing Press and Publications Act (PPPA) was used to control newspaper content. Ten people were arbitrarily arrested and detained under the Internal Security Act (ISA). Security forces continued to use excessive force while the establishment of an independent police complaints misconduct commission was postponed. Immigration personnel and volunteers conducted mass arrests of migrant workers. At least 22 people were sentenced to death. The number executed was unknown.

Is THIS the moral equivalency barometer on which Obama has the temerity to measure the United States??

    Disgraceful!

  2. Obama’s statement seems mild, almost pandering. But in fact it is a huge slap in the face of the Malaysian regime, because visiting heads of state just don’t say negative things about their hosts. In diplo-speak, this is the equivalent of a major scolding. Were he a Malaysian citizen, he would now be in the same place that Anwar Ibrahim is.

  3. #2, No President has ever said so many negative things both in national and in international forums about their OWN country as Obama has.

    Therein lies the disgrace…….

  4. It was clear from day 1 that this golf bag hated America. Unfortunately most of the voters in this Country are to dumb & ignorant to care. They just believe what the lying media feeds them, in between their favorite TV show. What apathy! We’re done as a nation unless we take control again and turn it around.

  5. we are not going to make it till the end of his term!! Next president is going to have a big job to do and fix up what this “campaigner” messed up
