obama[Video below.] President Obama addressed the church shooting in Charleston, South Caroline, from the White House today.

“Michelle and I know several members of Emanuel AME Church. We knew their pastor,” Obama said. “To say our thoughts and prayers are with them… doesn’t say enough.”

“Any death of this sort is a tragedy. Any shooting involving multiple victims is a tragedy. There is something particularly heartbreaking about a death happening in a place in which we seek solace and we seek peace. In a place of worship.”

“I’ve had to make statements like this too many times. Communities like this have had to endure tragedies like this too many times. Once again, communities [were harmed] because someone who wanted to inflict harm had no problem getting their hands on a gun.”

“Let’s be clear: At some point, we as a country will have to reckon with the fact that this type of mass violence does not happen in other advanced countries. It doesn’t happen in other places with this type of frequency. It is in our power to do something about it. I say that recognizing the politics in this town… but it would be wrong for us not to acknowledge it.”

Obama added that the fact that a black church was attacked evokes America’s disturbing history on race, but that the outpouring of condolences from people of every race and creed gave him hope that the past would not be the future.

  1. Yep, it’s inanimate objects’ fault. And of course, if guns would be made illegal, all the criminals would magically obey this one law while breaking the others. How silly! Firearms can be manufactured at home these days via 3d printers and other easy means. Firearms can always be smuggled from across the border – cocaine is very illegal yet very available. So it is not a question that criminals will always have firearms; the question is will the law abiding citizens have an option of defending their family and their property. As far as “it doesn’t happen in other countries” argument: first it does happen, and when it happens, the criminal perpetrators have a complete free ride, being the only armed wolf in a flock of sheep. Second, even though some Asian and European countries happen to have lower gun violence statistics, they also happen to have much lower over all violence and crime rates due to a docile culture and/or a lesser percentage of young people.

  2. Obama is right. We shouldn’t ignore the issue of guns. We should make sure that many more people carry legal concealed weapons, and know how to use them properly!

That would increase the likelihood of a potential mass murderer being taken down by someone in the crowd, before he can do too much damage.

That was the way they used to do it here in Israel, and it served as a deterrent to potential terrorists r”l. Anybody considering doing something crazy would have to take into account knew that they wouldn’t get too far, since they would immediately get picked off by gun carrying citizens.
