obama-with-footballPresident Obama said Thursday he “might have” suffered a concussion or two during his youth football days.

“When I was young and played football briefly, there were a couple of times where I’m sure that that ringing sensation in my head and the need to sit down for a while might have been a mild concussion, and at the time you didn’t think anything of it,” Obama said during the White House Healthy Kids & Safe Sports Concussion Summit, reports the Wall Street Journal.

The summit, whose purpose was to raise awareness of head injuries on the playing field, included guest speakers, a panel of athletes, and remarks by the president.

“We have to change a culture that says, ‘Suck it up,'” Obama said of the attitude, particularly in college and professional sports, of ignoring symptoms that could be a sign of a head injury.

  1. Too bad he only tried to play touch football instead of full tackle with his foreign policy. Maybe he has a concussion of his smart ear of trust in G-d too. A foolish president. Hope it is not a medical dilemma today.

  2. The comments above are not surprising…..at the end of the day he is the President of the US & as such a little respect should be afforded….
the comments are boorish, classless & show the product of people who have too much time on their hands…..

  3. Heh. But he is right on this one. The “culture” of showing off “toughness” in college sports is sheer stupidity and who knows how much health damage does. People should seek medical attention and rest as needed, and those who don’t, should not be admired and much less presented as role models.

  4. ANYBODY who played American football in high school or college experienced at least a few concussions. The sport is barbaric and dangerous. I went to public school, where football was king, and after watching a few games I was not at all surprised that the football players were not at the head of the class. It makes me sad to see frum guys so caught up in the Super Bowl that they rent TVs to watch it. It isn’t that it’s a “goyishe sport” – it’s that it’s such a brutal one.

#9 is right on target. The cult of “toughness” has gotten us into trouble not only on the playing fields but even in politics. Remember Pres. Johnson keeping us in Vietnam because he didn’t want the US to look like a “poor, pitiful helpless giant?” I won’t cite any more recent military actions – too controversial.

#8 has a good point too. There seems to be an idea that political differences excuse any type of talk. Of course, some of the coarser comments may not be coming from Yidden – after all, the site is open to everyone. One hopes that “derech eretz kadmah laTorah” as one of the goals of our yeshiva education is actually succeeding.

  5. skdoula – the office of president demands a bit of class. Unfortunately, he has none. Most people on his guests lists at White House dinners are rap artists, spoiled rich kids, racists, and the like. That’s who he holds to higher esteem.

  6. It is not a lack of derech eretz to make comparisons between his concussions and his intelligence quite the contrary. It is in fact a way to be dan l’kaf zechus why he’s such an unaccomplished one man mean wrecking ball of a president it’s not because he was born mean and stupid, rather it’s all symptoms of one who suffered a head injury and all he really needs is a refuah shlema. &It’s possible that he might have been born smart.
