Obama: I’m Afraid People View Tragedies as the New Normal

President Obama memorialized the victims of the Washington Navy Yard shooting today and called for a sweeping overhaul of the nation’s gun laws.

“Sometimes I fear there is a creeping resignation that these tragedies are just somehow the way it is, that this is somehow the new normal,” said Obama. “We cannot accept this.”

Obama, who was speaking to 4,000 mourners on the parade grounds at the Marine Barracks, also said that the nation needs to do more to address mental health issues. Last night, Obama asked those at a Congressional Black Caucus Foundation dinner “to get back up and go back at it” to get meaningful gun legislation passed. Read more at ABC News.
