obama[Video below.] In a CBS “60 Minutes” interview that aired Sunday night, President Obama inadvertently suggested an approach to the Middle East that places Israel on a par with its Arab neighbors, calling Israel “one of our closest allies in the region.”

Actually, Israel is by far our closest ally in the region, the one nation in the Middle East that can provide significant and reliable military support in the event of war.

But Obama during his presidency has pursued a more “even-handed” approach with respect to the Arabs than his predecessors, maintaining a rocky relationship with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu and moving the starting point for negotiations with the Palestinians back to the pre-1967 borders.

In the interview, Obama also suggested his contempt for Netanyahu, referring to the Israeli prime minster’s pleas for a tougher line against Iran and its nuclear program as part of the “noise” he has to ignore when making national security decisions for the United States.

  1. Matzav – you couldn’t have found a better picture to go with this article. Great journalism. Start working on a picture for election night when Obama gets word of his early retirement.

  2. For the record Mr. Pretzel, Israel may be our staunchest ally in the world. Is there another country in the universe that would act with such restraint after its people are attacked on a daily basis in the name of peace, stability and respect of its ally, the U.S. of A.? I submit NOT. So call me your professor and call Matzav.com your university a

  3. Yes, Israel is “one of” the US’s closest allies in the region. Remember that there are two NATO members in the region, Greece and Turkey. Israel, OTOH, still has no formal defense treaty with the US. Had the President promoted Israel to a level above Greece and Turkey, its NATO allies, it would have pissed both of them at the same time quite unnecessarily (and to anger both Greece and Turkey at the same time would indeed be quite an accomplishment).

I personally think that Israel should join NATO.

  4. arrg daven that this rasha doesnt get reelected its not even hidden how dangerous he is to our fellow brothers in israel
all it would take is obama making a deal with iran or …

  5. Mr. Hall:
    1) Greece is not part of the Middle East, hence it drops out of the equation.
    2) If you really think that Erdogan is an ally of the US, I have a bridge for sale I’d love to discuss with you.

  6. “Israel is by far our closest ally in the region” or so says our dear leader. Really? Israel may be OUR ally but this administration has been anything BUT an ally to Israel.
