dan-shapiroPresident Obama is expected to nominate a top National Security Council adviser to become the next U.S. ambassador to Israel.  Dan Shapiro, an aide to Obama since the 2008 presidential campaign, runs the Middle East and North Africa desk at NSC and according to reports is credited with warming up ties between President Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Shapiro has been a regular feature on diplomatic trips by Mideast peace envoy George Mitchell.

The timing of an announcement is not known but if confirmed by the Senate, which reportedly would be likely, Shapiro would replace ambassador James Cunningham, who was named to the post in 2008 by former President George W. Bush.

Shapiro was also an important figure during the Obama presidential campaign in attracting support from the American Jewish community, which overwhelmingly voted for Obama over Arizona Sen. John McCain in the 2008 election.

Shapiro previously worked in former President Bill Clinton’s National Security Council, was a staff member for the U.S. House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee and served as a deputy chief of staff for Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla.
