President Barack Obama and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a breakthrough deal on civilian nuclear projects on Sunday, allowing U.S. companies to supply the country with reactors while also strengthening defense ties.
“We are committed to moving towards full implementation,” Obama said at a news conference with Modi. “This is an important step that shows how we can work together to elevate our relationship.”
The plan resolves differences over a stalled 2008 pact over the liability U.S. companies would face in India in case of a nuclear accident.
Obama and Modi unveiled a 10-year framework for defense ties and cooperation on the joint production of drone aircraft and equipment for Lockheed Martin Corp’s C-130 military transportation plane.
Obama will also become the first U.S. president to attend India’s Republic Day parade on Monday as well as host a radio show with Modi, signaling warmer relations between the two nations. Read more.
