President Barack Obama said in an interview published by The Huffington Post on Saturday that his administration would “evaluate” its “options” in the Middle East due to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s recent comments on a two-state solution.

On Thursday, Netanyahu said he supports a demilitarized Palestinian state that recognizes a Jewish state-the same conditions he proposed for a two-state solution in a 2009 speech at Bar-Ilan University. But a day before the March 17 Israeli election, Netanyahu had said a Palestinian state would not be established under his watch.

“We take [Netanyahu] at his word when he said that [a Palestinian state] wouldn’t happen during his prime ministership, and so that’s why we’ve got to evaluate what other options are available to make sure that we don’t see a chaotic situation in the region,” Obama said.

Regarding Netanyahu’s pre-election expression of concern about high Israeli Arab voter turnout, Obama said, “We indicated that that kind of rhetoric was contrary to what is the best of Israel’s traditions. That although Israel was founded based on the historic Jewish homeland and the need to have a Jewish homeland, Israeli democracy has been premised on everybody in the country being treated equally and fairly. And I think that that is what’s best about Israeli democracy. If that is lost, then I think that not only does it give ammunition to folks who don’t believe in a Jewish state, but it also I think starts to erode the meaning of democracy in the country.”

Obama vowed to continue working with Israel on military and intelligence operations, but declined to confirm if his administration would continue to block unilateral Palestinian efforts to secure statehood through the United Nations, according to The Huffington Post.

  1. From his first day in office, this man has been looking for a pretense to totally derail the traditional US view of its relationship with Israel. He has finally found what he believes is the perfect pretense, in which he can hide behind his claim that he “takes Netanyahu at his word” about not supporting a two-state solution(even though every child knows that it was nothing more than a political ploy for Likud to get the right wing votes to ensure a comfortable majority to be given first crack at forming a government). His
playing up Netanyahu’s comment about Arabs going in droves to vote is also nothing more than an attempt to paint a perfectly legitimate call on right leaning voters not to be complacent-as the worst form of racism, in order for him to implement his plan from day one, to-put the “daylight between the US and Israel” that he has been seeking from day one. There neefs to be a MASSIVE outcry in the US against this blatant defamation of the Israeli prime minister. If this isnot stopped in its tracks, it can lead to the total deligitamization of Israel.

  2. If he would have listened to the speach or read the transcript OB would have learned that negotiating in the Persian Bazaar requires the ability to walk away when your adversary makes unreasonable demands, and to take concessions off the table to make his unreasonableness prove costly to him .The lameness of Obamas’ arguments make him the ugliest duckling (lame or otherwise)of all time.Bibi did not Flipflop on the ” 2 state solution” because Obama wanted it to be the FINAL SOLUTION and Jews are not suicidal.

  3. lowlife real valueslying piece of garbage who runs after every islamo fascist with outstretched arms but is nasty to anyone with any

  4. Yes, President Obama and his administration are taking full advantage of Prime Minister Netanyahu’s statements… exactly as Netanyahu knew they would. Netanyahu isn’t stupid, but he was desperate not to lose the election, so he employed his own Samson Option to capture the vote of Israelis concerned about security. Now it’s time to pay the piper.

The irony is, had Herzog won (as Obama desperately wished), the U.S. would’ve had to play nice with an Israeli government whose positions re: Palestinians aren’t that different from Netanyahu’s.

  5. “From his first day in office, this man has been looking for a pretense to totally derail the traditional US view of its relationship with Israel.”

That is simply not true and everyone knows that it isn’t true. US Israel military cooperation has increases to levels never before seen, the US funded Iron Dome, and the US continues to vote with Israel at the UN.

“every child knows that it was nothing more than a political ploy for Likud”

Every child does, but Obama doesn’t seem to understand this. I’m normally a big Obama supporter but he should have accepted Netanyahu’s walk back on the No Palestinian State Ever issue. In fact Obama and Kerry should have known that Netanyahu was deliberately misleading Israel’s voters on that in order to steal votes from Yachad and Bayit Yehudi. The result ironically makes a real Palestinian State much more likely.

  6. Charlie, the point here is that Obama DOES understand what every child does, so it is obviously just a convenient excuse to seriously downgrade Israe’s standing in its relationship with the US.

  7. He’s just trying to deflect from his own government and reign which is quickly eroding.
By employing his nasty and sly back-stabbing rhetoric in this manner he is setting the stage for him to look like an,angel when he eventually back-tracks. He’s not stupid but he’s awfully hateful toward Netanyahu and resentful that his win was so grandeur and big in spite of all he invested to derail Netanyahu. He’s another Erdogan.

  8. #8, We must understand that the biggest obstacle to a Palestinian state are the Palestinians themselves. They have no interest in a 2 state solution. They want one state for the whole world, any which way possible. And even then, they’ll kill each other. Obama is the guilty party when he fails to realize such an obvious observation. The other presidents had to learn it, but before Obama such incredible deals for the pals were either rejected or completely sabotaged by the bloodthirsty palestinian people and their cohorts. And since Hussein took office, has he not realized that it is pointless to make deals with “people” who run over pedestrians, and kill completely harmless people in their houses of prayer? Trust me, I tried to come into an open mind with Obama, but all he seems to represent is the “popular” UN belief system that bloodthirsty arabs can do whatever they want under the guise of human rights. It’s disgusting and I’m glad someone is standing up to it.

  9. why not print the full transcripts of what netanyahu and obama actually said instead of silly noncontext versions that hide the full comments.?
Actually informing readers would be to publish these relevant transcripts of what netanyahu and obama have said:
obama’s comments are in this interview, so you should pull the entire piece from the interview and publish it.
    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/03/21/obama-huffpost-interview-transcript_n_6905450.html

Then you should publish all of Netanyahus comments on the subject from before the election.
Here are what seems to be the fullest coverages of what Netanyahu said:
Nertyanyahu: “I think that anyone who is going to establish a Palestinian state today and evacuate lands is giving attack grounds to the radical Islam against the state of Israel,” he said in a video interview published Monday on the NRG site. “Anyone who ignores this is sticking his head in the sand. The left does this time and time again,” Netanyahu said. “We are realistic and understand.”
Asked specially if he meant a Palestinian state would not be established if he were reelected prime minister, he answered, “Indeed.”

Then you can publish Netanyahus POST election comments that were given prior to Obama’s comments: Here’s one of the fullest Netanyahu responses to the matter with Andrea Mitchell of the Palestinian state issue:
ANDREA MITCHELL: Prime Minister, congratulations on your victory.
BENJAMIN NETANYAHU, PRIME MINISTER OF ISRAEL: Thank you.
MITCHELL: But — there’s always a but — critics and analysts here and around the world are saying at what cost. Your hard turn right on the Palestinian issue, what you said about the Arab voters coming out in droves, they say are costing you, costing you support around the world.
NETANYAHU: Well, neither one is — the premises in your question are wrong. I haven’t changed my policy. I never changed my speech in Bar Ilan University six years ago calling for a demilitarized Palestinian state that recognizes the Jewish state. What has changed is the reality. Abu Mazen, the Palestinian leader, refuses to recognize the Jewish state, has made a pact with Hamas that calls for destruction of Jewish state. And every territory that is vacated in the Middle East is taken up by Islamist forces.
MITCHELL: But they are saying –
NETANYAHU: We want that to change, so we can realize a vision of real, sustained real peace. And I don’t want a one-state solution. I want a sustainable, peaceful two-state solution, but for that circumstances have to change.
MITCHELL: But you were reelected on a mandate, certainly Israeli voters, your supporters, believe you were reelected on a mandate against a two-state solution. That is the way the White House is interpreting. The White House says this is divisive, and it’s so divisive that now the administration is saying that they will not stop the U.N. from conferring statehood. They will not block — or at least they’re strongly considering not blocking a vote for statehood for Palestinians.
NETANYAHU: Well, first of all, that state would become a terrorist state. Iran says that they will arm the West Bank the way they arm Gaza. We withdrew from Gaza. We got just a few months ago, not ancient history but a few months ago, thousands of rockets, Andrea, on our heads.
MITCHELL: So what does that mean –
NETANYAHU: We don’t want it to happen again. And I think the administration has said time and time again that the only way to achieve peace is a negotiated solution. You can’t impose peace. And in any case, if you want to get peace, you’ve got to get the Palestinian leadership to abandon their pact with Hamas and engage in genuine negotiations with Israel for an achievable peace.
We also have to make sure that we don’t have ISIS coming into that territory. It’s only two dozen from our borders, thousands of miles away from yours.
So we need the conditions of recognition of a Jewish state and real security in order to have a realistic two-state solution. And I was talking about what is achievable and what is not achievable. To make it achievable, then you have to have real negotiations with people who are committed to peace. We are. It’s time that we saw the pressure on the Palestinians to show that they are committed too.
MITCHELL: Words have meaning. Tom Friedman wrote today, “They must have been doing high-fives in Tehran when they saw how low Bibi sank to win. What better way to isolate Israel globally and deflect attention from Iran’s behavior?”
Joe Klein in “Time” magazine quoted bigotry. Jeffrey Goldberg said that it would be calamitous, the way you talked about Arab voters and the way you talked about not going for a Palestinian state.
NETANYAHU: Well, I explained on the Palestinian state what it is we need. We need a demilitarized state that recognizes a Jewish state.
MITCHELL: Can — telling your supporters –
NETANYAHU: But an Arab vote is, I think, it’s very, very important. First of all, I’m very proud to be the prime minister of all of Israel’s citizens, Arabs and Jews alike.
MITCHELL: That’s not the way it sounded on election day.
NETANYAHU: Well, if you hear what I said, you might reconsider what you just said and what you quoted. I’m very proud of the fact that Israel is the one country in a very broad radius that — in which Arabs have free and fair elections. That’s sacrosanct. That will never change.
MITCHELL: Critics and analysts here and around the world are saying at what cost. Your hard turn right on the Palestinian issue, what you said about the Arab voters coming out in droves, they say are costing you, costing you support around the world.
NETANYAHU: Well, neither one is— the premises in your question are wrong.
