The Obama administration announced Tuesday a proposal to begin drilling for oil and natural gas in U.S. waters off of the Atlantic Coast. The drilling plan would be for 2017 to 2022, but it could take many years to clear the waters off of Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina or Georgia for drilling.
Interior Secretary Sally Jewell stressed the administration was suggesting a “a balanced proposal.”
The plan would also include a potential lease sale in the Atlantic in 2021, but the administration will ultimately determine if the environment is too fragile. The administration canceled a previous lease sale to BP after the 2010 Gulf of Mexico spill. Read more.
