In a rare Oval Office address Sunday night, President Barack Obama declared the San Bernardino shootings as an “act of terrorism designed to kill innocent people,” but that there was no evidence the attack was directed by a militant group overseas or part of a broader conspiracy in the U.S.
Obama outlined the steps the government is taking to fight the threat of terrorism both abroad and at home through international cooperation in accelerating the battle against ISIS in Iraq and Syria as well as being “resilient and relentless.”
Obama also broached gun control with a call to prevent people on the “no fly” list from buying guns as well as tighter restrictions on assault weapons.
“We need to make it harder for people to buy powerful assault weapons like ones used in California attack,” he said. “I am confident that we will succeed in this mission, because we are on the right side of history.”
