g0iaphniWest Virginia Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin has issued a state of emergency in Kanawha and Fayette counties due to a train derailment that occurred in Fayette County.

The governor declared the state of emergency after the derailment occurred in the Mount Carbon area. The cars, which were hauling crude oil caught fire, and destroyed a home. At least one of the cars was leaking oil into the river, and at least one of the cars went into the river.

Several cars were burning at the scene, and officials estimated the crude oil will continue to burn until about midnight. Power has been knocked out to some areas.

West Virginia American Water said in a news release that it is aware of the train derailment that happened just east of Montgomery on the Fayette-Kanawha County line.

The Montgomery water treatment plant, which draws water from the Kanawha River a few miles downstream of the accident, was shut down about 2:30 p.m. Monday.

Customers in the Montgomery area are asked to conserve water and only use it for essential functions at this time. West Virginia American Water is working with emergency responders and the Bureau for Public Health on continued response efforts.

Fayette County deputies said more than 1,000 people were evacuated due to the train derailment.
