alice-herz-sommerAlice Herz-Sommer, the world’s oldest known Holocaust survivor, passed away Sunday morning at the age of 110. Herz-Sommer had been admitted to a hospital in London, where she lived, after feeling unwell Thursday. “She passed away peacefully, with her family by her side,” her grandson Ariel told Ynet.

“Much was written about her, but for those of us who knew her best, she was ‘Gigi’. She loved us, laughed with us and cherished music with us,” the grandson added. “She was our inspiration and our world will be significantly duller without her in it.”

Born in Prague, Herz-Sommer began to play the piano from an early age and eventually became a part of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra. After World War II broke out, she was arrested by the Nazis and moved to the Theresienstadt concentration camp, where she was forced to play concerts for German officers. Her story served as the basis for the film “The Lady in Number 6: Music Saved my Life,” an Oscar nominee for best short documentary.

  1. Baruch Dyan HaEmes. I would like to view her documentary. We must obtain video & audio testimonies from all remaining survivors ASAP. Soon it will be too late to do so, & all our children & grandchildren & our future generations will have left, are the recorded histories, which don’t even come close to hearing & seeing a neshoma kedosha share what they can. For many survivors it is too painful to even speak of their experiences, but many are realizing that they must, or nobody will be left who can do so, & so we need to give them support & encouragement & lots of love & respect & understanding.

  2. Yiddin! please listen to me! Rabbi Yom Tov Erlich Z’l said in one of his songs
“20 years has passed (since the holocaust) and there are those denying that it happened….. eventually they will say that the holocauts was just a bad dream of a victims made up fantasy”

We must do everything in our power to get all information of the holocaust documented not only in archives but in our minds and hearts! please please please remember that!
