Olmert to Undergo Surgery in the US

olmert2Former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has decided to remove a tumor in his prostate in the US, his office has said in a statement. The statement said the surgery would be conducted in the coming weeks, but did not give a specific date. Olmert explained that he had decided to undergo the surgery in the US because the medical technology there enables him to undergo the procedure in a manner he desires. As we reported here on Matzav.com last week, Olmert’s prostate cancer is deteriorating, a recent series of tests conducted by doctors at New York’s renowned Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center determined.  The tests indicate a growth of the tumor that necessitates immediate treatment.

Olmert informed the public of his diagnosis in October 2007.

Prostate cancer is mostly common in men over 50 years of age. Unlike other forms of cancer, cancerous cells in the prostate are common, and a growth can remain unchanged for a long period of time.

The presence of cancerous cells has been documented in nearly a third of men over the age of 50 and in an absolute majority of men over the age of 80.

The cancer’s slow progression often has no noticeable symptoms. There are however cases where the cancer spreads rapidly to other organs, particularly the bones.
