After years of delay, a government committee recently finally met to select seven new dayonim who are desperately needed by the Chief Rabbinate’s aging Beis Din Hagadol in Yerushalayim. But due to chareidi opposition to many of the candidates, only one dayan was selected so far, religious Zionist Rav Eliezer Igra, who has served for the past 24 years as the av beis din of the Be’er Sheva region.

Because seven votes are required to select any dayan, the three chareidim on the nine man panel succeeding in preventing the appointment of other candidates whom they found unsuitable, including Rav Uriel Lavi, who permitted a woman to receive a get from a comatose husband two years ago. The chareidim on the panel also prevented the appointment of two Tzohar linked rabbis to regional botei din.

The Beis Din Hagadol went on strike and has ceased all judicial activities until the appointment of the full roster of dayonim to its panel.
