pipelineOrange County lawmakers voted Friday to block construction of Kiryas Yoel’s water pipeline until the village secures permits it needs from the state and New York City for its planned Catskill Aqueduct connection.

The resolution, proposed by Democrat Roxanne Donnery and approved by a 12-6 vote, instructs the county to withhold its own permits for road excavation and stop work on county roads until the state Department of Environmental Conservation and city Department of Environment Protection have approved the plans.

“You can’t build a deck on the back of your house without a permit,” said Donnery, a longtime opponent of the water project. “This is a huge issue for the people of Woodbury.”

Several lawmakers sought to hold off on the proposal until getting more information, but failed to win enough votes.

Kiryas Joel recently began building its pipeline, which is expected to stretch 13.5 miles through Woodbury and Cornwall and tap New York City’s water tunnel in New Windsor.

Much of the initial work will follow County Route 44, known as Seven Springs Road and Ridge Road in Woodbury.

The impact of the Legislature’s resolution is unclear. County Spokeswoman Kristin Jensen said Friday the Department of Public Works already has granted Kiryas Joel a permit for pipeline work on Route 44, and that it’s reviewing the resolution to determine what effect it could have.

  2. Thr bigger concern here is that nyc’s watr is florinated which can cause healthh probs in preg ladys, miors and men. For those who elect to use florine it can be admin thru tooth paste which can help a lot more than water which is immediately swallowed.

First of all, It is FLOURIDE not FLOURINE!
Secondly, adding flouride to water is one of the greatest additions to dental health. Ever go to a European country and see a bunch of rotting teeth? No Flouride!
