Earlier this week, while Jews around the world busied themselves with preparations for Pesach, United Orthodox Synagogues of Houston (UOS) was devastated by flood waters — for the second time in less than a year.

UOS, an Orthodox Union-member shul, reported about three feet of water in its sanctuary after sustaining more than $1 million in damages from the flooding that hit last May on Memorial day.

Rabbi Barry Gelman of UOS reported that a massive capital campaign will be required for the synagogue to rebuild and ensure that the building will remain unaffected by future floodwaters. The OU’s disaster relief fund will be sending aid for the shuls’ repairs to maintain and strengthen its vibrant community.

Rabbi Judah Isaacs, Director of the Orthodox Union’s Department of Community Engagement, announced, “The UOS community now faces a difficult reality — massive flooding is a regular part of their lives and they need to undertake steps to protect against future damage. In Houston, like many cities around the country, the synagogue is the center point of the Jewish community — its survival is essential and your support is greatly appreciated. Help launch that effort today with your donation to the OU disaster relief fund.”
