mumps-outbreakThe Philadelphia Health Department is warning about an outbreak of mumps at the Yeshiva of Philadelphia in Overbrook. 19 cases of mumps have been reported at Talmudical Yeshiva of Philadelphia. The yeshiva is located on Drexel Road off City Avenue.

The health department is working to contain the virus and has identified those who were exposed.

Officials say there is no risk to the general public as of now.

  1. unfortunately it has now passed on to the community school (whose boys learn with and have bachurim from philly as leaders in Pirchei). Hopefully it won’t get bad.

  2. We can assume that all of these 19 Talmidim who contracted the Mumps — like almost all American students — had previously received the full line of medical vaccinations, including the one for the Mumps, called “MMR” (three vaccinations, for Measles, Mumps, and Rubella are combined into one injection).

AND YET, THEY STILL GOT THE MUMPS!!

This should be another example of the fact that the vaccine is not fully effective in preventing the disease.

Furthermore, there are a lot of indications that this MMR vaccine can instead, actually be quite harmful to many people.

About a year ago, at http://matzav.com/preventing-a-mumps-outbreak-at-beth-medrash-govoah, I posted copies of some articles on this subject from the WDDTY web site, and I will post two of them again here.

MMR: Major mumps outbreak proves the vaccine doesn’t work

    10 April 2008

At a time when health officials are quietly admitting that there could be a link between the MMR (measles-mumps-rubella) vaccine and autism, a new study has also discovered that it doesn’t work.

Researchers investigating a large outbreak of mumps in 2006, when 6,584 cases were reported among college students, have discovered that virtually every sufferer had been vaccinated twice against the disease.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reveals that at least 84 per cent of young adults aged between 18 and 24 years had received two-dose vaccines against mumps.  And in 2006 – when the outbreak occurred – the national two-dose coverage among adolescents reached 87 per cent, the highest in US history, and just one point below that needed for ‘herd immunity’.
CDC researchers speculate that the outbreak – primarily among 18- to 24-year-olds – was the result of the ‘wrong type of mumps’.  The vaccine is supposed to protect against A-virus mumps, whereas the outbreak in 2006 was caused by the G-virus strain.

Despite its limitations, the CDC team reckons that all children need a third dose of MMR – even though the two-dose vaccine was introduced following a 1980 mumps outbreak among children who had received a single vaccine dose.

It may be a measure that will be hard to introduce at a time when health officials are accepting that the MMR vaccine can cause autism among children with a ‘mitochondrial disorder’.

MMR and Autism: US court says there’s a link, and awards compensation

    06 March 2008

The MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine can cause autism, a US court has concluded.

In a secret ruling that has only just come to light, the US Court of Federal Claims has conceded that the mercury-based preservative thimerosal, which was in vaccines until 2002, caused autism in the case of one child.

The ruling is one of 4,900 cases currently being considered for compensation payments, and it is feared by health officials that it could open the floodgates for even more claims.  It also appears to support the controversial findings of Dr Andrew Wakefield, who, in 1998, suggested a link between the vaccine and autism.

The ruling, made by US Assistant Attorney General Peter Keisler, was made last November, and was one of three test cases into the MMR-autism link that was being considered by a three-member panel, which Keisler chaired.

In his conclusion, Keisler said that “compensation is appropriate”.

The case involved a child who, when she was 18 months old, received nine vaccinations in July 2000, two of which included thimerosal.  Within days, the girl, who had previously been healthy, suddenly exhibited no response to verbal direction, loss of language skills, no eye contact, insomnia, incessant screaming, and arching.

A diagnosis of autism was confirmed seven months later.

In its defence, the US government said the girl had a pre-existing mitochondrial disorder that was aggravated by the vaccine.

About a week ago, the WDDTY web site had a further update on the subject at http://www.wddty.com/40-uk-children-killed-by-mmr-and-the-true-picture-could-be-10-times-worse.html. Here is a copy of that article.

40 UK children killed by MMR – and the true picture could be 10 times worse

    27 October 2010

Forty children have died after a routine vaccination such as MMR and 2,100 more have suffered a serious reaction, UK health authorities have been forced to disclose this week – and these figures are just the tip of the iceberg.

Two of the vaccinated children have been left with permanent brain damage, and 1500 others have suffered neurological reactions, including 11 cases of brain inflammation and 13 cases of epilepsy and coma.  Overall, there have been more than 2,100 adverse reactions to a childhood vaccine in the UK in the last seven years.

The UK’s Medicine and Healthcare Products Regulatory Authority (MHRA) was forced to reveal the figures following a request from a journalist under freedom of information legislation.

The true picture is likely to be far worse.  The MHRA cases are only those that doctors have reported; if the doctor does not believe the vaccine has caused the reaction, he will not report it.  It is suspected that just 10 per cent of all deaths and reactions from vaccines are ever reported; if so, this means that 400 children have died from a vaccine and 21,000 have suffered an adverse reaction in the UK alone.  The true situation will be far worse in countries such as the US where childhood vaccination is compulsory.

Last month, the UK government was forced by a court to pay damages to a mother whose son was left with severe brain damage after an MMR vaccination.  Another 500 similar cases are currently going through the UK courts.

These figures represent a major setback in the relationship between doctors and parents.  Most parents have accepted the reassurances of doctors and health authorities that the vaccines are safe, and that they are doing the best for their child and the community.

Now, if things go wrong, they may be less inclined to believe the doctor’s denials that the vaccine is to blame.

  6. Funny, I thought this was a fluke, a wild strain.
And that the kids who are getting it are getting mild cases, so maybe there is some value in the vaccine.

I wouldn’t throw out the baby with the bathwater and stop vaccinating. What might be of value, to those who evoke autism and other reactions, is staggering the schedule so it doesn’t overload the baby’s developing immune system. But ch”v that someone forgoes immunization based on this episode.

  7. To anon: The boy in the community school who got the mumps does not go to Pirchei or Mishmor in yeshiva so he didn’t get mumps from a bachur.
