The Paradies apartment hotel in the Alpine village of Arosa in eastern Switzerland is being accused of anti-Semitism after an outraged guest posted to Facebook a picture of a notice plastered outside the hotel pool.

“To our Jewish Guests, women, men and children, please take a shower before you go swimming,” it said, adding that “If you break the rules I’m forced to (close) the swimming pool for you.”

Paradies manager Ruth Thomann, who signed the notices, meanwhile insisted to Swiss news outlets that she was not an anti-Semite, and that other guests had complained that some of many Jewish clientele did not shower before using the pool and had asked her to do something to remedy the situation. Thomann acknowledged that her “choice of words was a mistake.”

There have been several calls by many Jewish organizations to have the hotel shut down for its behavior. Read more at Yahoo News.

    • No. Because they are referring to ALL users.
But there is a problem when a hotel singles out certain customers by their race.

  1. What a Chillul Hashem! Yes, the choice of words directed to one group can be racial and anti-semetic.

Before people jump on that wagon of calling for the Hotel closure and claiming a racial slur, perhaps we should look inward and evaluate ourselves. Could it be the Hotel personnel was reacting to the impression that a certain group had lower hygiene standards than another group? Could it be true, that certain visitors were caught cutting the rules, and this group needs to be educated to better standards?
Maybe the Hotel wants continued Jewish clients, just they prefer guests are not offended by others’ hygiene habits.
If there is a tinge of anti-semetic in that posting, we need to make sure we are not guilty of the hygiene claim first.
We are meant to be a light to the nations, and not to make a Chillul Hashem in Public …

    • Kudos to you for stating the obvious. It’s too easy to play the victim every time. Let’s avoid this kind of situation all together by following the rules of any institution we visit (be it Jewish or non-jewish).

  2. I read the sign and then read the article and I’m wondering when did the word shower become a dirty word. To me its obvious the hotel had no wrong intentions. Almost every mikva in Boro Park has such a sign. Its because of overly sensitive people, that make a big out of nothing, that the holocaust has lost much of its meaning to many non jews . And I hate to say it to me too.

  3. I am not defending the sign the hotel owner posted, as I don’t know her true intentions. But I feel I need to add this information for all non europeans: I’m a swiss citizen, grew up there and living now in the States – we ALWAYS took a quick shower before going into the pool, a common thing not only in Switzerland, but also in other european countries!
Great shower rooms are available, and even a special foot shower with disinfectant! They consider this a measure to keep proper hygiene at the pool.
I never see this happen around our community though and therefore can see this lady posting the sign.

  4. What are Yidden doing hanging out in Shvietz? The economy is back? Everyone is so wealthy? I can’t afford such extravagance.

  5. Some people seem to forget that we are in golus. Yes, antisemitism exists and will continue to exist until moshiach comes. It could be that there were some antisemetic feelings when the manager put up the sign, but if it’s common practice by everyone to shower before entering the pool, then it’s no surprise. There’s no need to call for the hotel’s closure. Maybe a disciplinary action towards the manager. Yes, it was definitely wrong to put up such a sign. But first let’s see if there was an actual hygiene issue. When we come and break the rules, we should expect to be called out for it.

  6. I seem to recall that when the Jews were “welcomed” at Auschwitz they were “asked” to take a cleansing “shower”. Some things don’t change, do they?

  7. Hypacrites, follow the rules? How about money laundering for the Nazis? Or how about shooting allied planes out of the sky? Didnt Switzerland also please cattle cars to the nazis? What about the Swiss pretending jews weren’t being transferred to camps through Swiss territory? But you know you must take a shower before swimming!
