The longest “blood moon” eclipse this century lingered in the skies Friday, coinciding with Mars’ closest approach in 15 years to treat skygazers across the globe to a thrilling celestial spectacle.

From the Cape of Good Hope to the Middle East, and from the Kremlin to Sydney Harbour, thousands of people turned their eyes to the stars to watch the moon, which turned dark before shining orange, brown and crimson in the shadow.

The total eclipse lasted 1 hour, 42 minutes and 57 seconds, though a partial eclipse preceded and follows, meaning the moon spent a total of nearly 4 hours in the Earth’s umbral shadow, according to NASA.

Astronomers in Israel took over 1000 photographs capturing the historic blood moon from when it rose until its descent.

  1. Yes it’s a warning. This Thursday is the Toeiva parade in Jerusalem. Where are the protesters. Why aren’t a half million Jews shutting down the city.

    • Because secular coercion against G-d and His Torah is more powerful than Torah which may not be refuted even with all religious Jews in the entire land of Israel.

      • Secular coercion is not more powerful than our eternal Torah. In Europe they thought that the reform are powerful and they too can destroy Torah. But then the holocaust came and today the reform are almost extinct.

        • Well, momentarily, they have all the power in the world with the help of the self-appointed Torah-hater judges in the Supreme Court. The Begatz ibber alles.

          • They are losing their power. As the chareidi population is increasing very quickly and many of the secular kids are doing tsuvah or running away from israel, the secular leadership knows their days are numbered. They make a lot of noise just like the reform but if you look closely there is a revolution in eretz yisroel. Yes they are carrying on but it’s like fish caught in a trap jumping up and down. They are all half dead.

  2. Just wondering. Aren’t we benefiting from חילול שבת by viewing these pictures? While it may not be strictly speaking against halacha, isn’t it something we should avoid?

  3. To Naar and Anonymous: the eclipse wasn’t just in Israel, so in all likelihood the vast majority of photos of the eclipse – especially the professional ones – were taken by non Jews, so no chillul Shabbos there. So enjoy nifla’os habriah calmly.
