israel-paradeMore than 100,000 people attended the annual pro-Israel march in New York City yesterday. The Salute to Israel parade, which honored the city of Tel Aviv’s 100th anniversary, was attended by the parents of kidnapped Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, who were welcomed by the parade’s Grand Marshall, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. The march down Manhattan’s Fifth Avenue was also led by N.Y. Gov. David Paterson, Israel’s Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon, and Tel Aviv Mayor Ron Huldai. The parade was tinged with concern for the security of Israel as it launched the biggest Civil Defense drill in its 61-year history amid rising tensions with Iran.

The five-day drill, dubbed Turning Point 3, will put civilians and the military through rehearsals for rocket and missile attacks.

“It’s very sad that Israel has to do such a thing especially on the day we are celebrating,” said Craig Sherman, 49, an upper East Side doctor. “Everyone is fearful,” said Sherman, who has several relatives in the country. “When you live only a few minutes away from potentially being bombed and you have only a few seconds to go get shelter it’s very scary.”

  1. Mordechai, I can see how the largest gathering of Jews in the USA on an annual basis to support a common cause, that of Medinat Yisrael, is K’neged Hatorah and a chillul hashem. I guess if more people were there protesting with Neturie karta and a few garbage cans were burned it would be more in line with your “true” torah ideals.

  2. I don’t understand the mindset of those people who bash everyone who participates in the Salute to Israel Parade, or people who celebrate Yom Ha’Atzmaut. Yes, many things are against the Torah altz pritzus and other things. However, in the world we live in, for every other country to see that Klal Yisrael is divided so much, and that they barely, almost never, unite for a cause such as the Salute to Israel Parade, is just awful. That’s why so many different sects of Judaism don’t respect one another, and that’s exactly what the Goyim are going to use as an open to side with the Arabs or any other nation that stands against us. It’s very important for Yeshiva bochurim to learn; however, when Klal Yisrael needs to unite as one, no matter what denomination you are a member of, then Yeshiva bochurim should, and must, participate. I’m not saying that they should go to every event that might have pritzus galore; but a rally in Washington, or any other place, is not k’neged the Torah. The goyim aren’t looking at how much Torah we learn; they’re looking at our middos and derech eretz, and especially, our Achdus! So those who want to be grateful for being able to travel and settle freely in Eretz Yisrael should NOT be yelled at, made fun of, or be told that they are abominable people who deserve to be punished. Rather, let them carry out their duty to show the nations around us that they stand with and support the State of Israel, and, B’Ezras HaShem, HaShem will grant us allies who will side with us against all who wish to destroy us!
