Palestinian Authority (PA) Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki on Sunday called on the heads of the Arab League and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation to convene an emergency meeting over President Donald Trump’s potential recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital this week.

Trump will reportedly make an announcement on Dec. 6 regarding U.S. recognition of Jerusalem.

“Maliki called for holding meetings of the Arab League and Organisation of Islamic Cooperation on the level of permanent representatives to discuss the imminent dangers facing Jerusalem and the holy sites,” the official PA news agency Wafa reported.

According to the Palestinian news outlet, Maliki conducted emergency phone calls on Sunday with the Arab League Secretary-General Ahmad Aboul Gheit and Organisation of Islamic Cooperation Secretary-General Yousef Al-Othaimeen.

Gheit stated last weekend that U.S. recognition of Jerusalem would “fuel extremism” and make Palestinians “resort to violence.” Jordan and Egypt both issued similar warnings.

Both the Gaza-ruling Palestinian terror group Hamas and the PA made threats ahead of the potential U.S. recognition of Jerusalem.

Hamas last Saturday called to “renew the Jerusalem intifada” in order to prevent the change in U.S. policy. PA President Mahmoud Abbas’s adviser, Mahmoud Habash, said American recognition of the Israeli capital would cause the “complete destruction of the peace process,” adding that “the world will pay a price.”

Trump has a Dec. 4 deadline to decide on whether to sign the latest waiver postponing the relocation of the U.S. Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
