Pelosi Defends Reid, Says His Story On Romney Taxes ‘Is True’ August 7, 2012 3:19 am
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi is defending Sen. Harry Reid’s attacks on Mitt Romney, which she says are true.
Reid (D-Nev.), the majority leader of the Senate, is at the center of a controversy following his comments that a Bain Capital investor told him that the presumptive GOP presidential nominee hadn’t paid any income taxes over a 10-year period.
Pelosi (D-Calif.) said Reid is telling the truth and that Romney should release his tax forms to prove it one way or the other.
“Harry Reid made a statement that is true. Somebody told him. It is a fact,” Pelosi said to The Huffington Post on Sunday. “Whether he did or not can easily be disposed of: Mitt Romney can release his tax returns and show whether he paid taxes.”
Reid has refused to say who told him the story and has offered no evidence it is true.
Earlier on Sunday, Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus and Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) both strongly criticized Reid’s claim. Priebus called Reid a “dirty liar” for the accusation.
When asked about Priebus’s comment, Pelosi initially said “Who?”
“Well, he doesn’t know that,” Pelosi added. “Harry Reid is a person who is, as we know, A, is a fighter, B, he wouldn’t say this unless it was true that somebody told him that.”
Democrats have been happy to see the Reid story play out in the press, as it keeps Romney’s tax record front and center for voters. Pelosi’s comments seemed in line with that strategy.
Reid last week told The Huffington Post that a Bain Capital investor told him Romney had not paid any taxes in 10 years. That’s why, Reid said, Romney has refused to release more than the roughly two years worth of tax returns he’s already shared.
In response, Republicans accused Reid of making up the story and urged him to name the investor, something Reid has refused to do.
Pelosi said Romney should just release his tax returns and put the discussion to rest.
“I think it’s a loser issue for him,” Pelosi said. “But I’m not doing his campaign.”
