Frank Kendall, undersecretary of defense for acquisition, technology, and logistics, said during a House Armed Services Committee hearing that he is concerned by large-scale cuts in U.S. defense spending that are undermining efforts to maintain U.S. military superiority.

  1. We starve our public schools, underpay our teachers and give them over-sized classes, make sure our college graduates are burdened with too much debt to do anything innovative, cut funding for basic science, tell our kids with math aptitude that they should go into stock trading instead of science and engineering, and then we’re surprised that the rest of the world is passing us by?

You get what you pay for and what you encourage. We don’t provide adequate education. We don’t offer opportunities for thinking outside the box. We encourage young people to make money instead of pursue their ideals (and force them to with debt burdens). Of course we’re falling behind.
