chris-christieNew New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has caught the attention of animal welfare group PETA after killing a wayward spider in front of a group of school children over the weekend.

The incident occurred when the governor was meeting with his daughter’s fourth grade class and in what appears to be his office. Governor Christie smashed the spider with his hand and wiped up with the back of his desk chair and the inside of his pants pocket.

“That’s also one of the fun parts of being governor, he said to the school group, according to a video posted on YouTube by the governor’s office. “Any bugs on your desk you’re allowed to kill them and not get in trouble.”

According to Talking Points Memo, PETA president Ingrid Newkirk described the governor’s actions as thoughtless.

“He probably did it without thinking. Some people put the spider outside, but spiders are often scary to people, and that can prevent them from pondering their worth,” Newkirk said.

Governor Christie posed about the incident on Twitter, saying “Earlier today I saved a few school children from a spider #nobigdeal #toughdayattheoffice.”

  1. It just shows again what idiots they are!

A number of years ago Sean Hannity was interviewing a PETA wacko and he asked the PETA nut this question.
“Suppose you were driving down a country road and a little baby crawled onto the road and from the other side there was a cat. You could swerve to avoid hitting one. Which would swerve to avoid?” The PETA nut answered, I don’t know!” To Sean’s credit at that point he ended the interview!

  2. PETA should catch the spider and put it in their office. Allow the spider to multiply into thousands of spiders and then enjoy them all. Let them take some home to their own PETA houses and multiply some more. How much fun this is!!!

  3. Give me a break! I kill spiders and other creepy crawlies all the time. Spiders can give nasty bites even if they are not poisonous, so I say kill them if you find them in your house because you don’t want them crawling into your bed when you’re sleeping and biting you. I generally leave outdoor creatures alone except for mosquitoes which I hate with a passion!

  4. From Tomer Devorah by R Moshe Cordovero:

It is good medicine (t’ruf’ah) for a person to honor the creatures (nivra’im) entirely, all of them, since he recognizes in them the quality of the Creator (ma’alat haborei) who “formed the human with wisdom” and so formed all creatures – the Wisdom of the Maker hayotser is in them, and one [can] see for himself that they are so very very honored, for the One who forms [them] cares for all…And it is evil in the eyes of the Holy One if they despise any creature briyah of his creatures, and this is what it means to say: Mah rabu ma’asekha “How great/diverse are your works” (Ps.104:4).

  5. Just in case anyone was wondering, From July 1998 through the end of 2012, PETA has killed more than 29000 dogs and cats at its Norfolk, Virginia headquarters. That’s an average of over 30 pets per week..

These are from government documents obtained through public records – According to records from the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.

I’m surprised he didn’t eat it.
