umanSome Breslovers are currently promoting the importation of the remains of Rav Nachman of Breslov zt”l, and one of the senior rabbis of the Religious-Zionist movement has joined the struggle. Rabbi Shlomo Aviner, who has previously opposed the practice of going to Rav Nachman’s kever in the Ukrainian town of Breslov for Rosh Hashanah, has expressed his support for a petition being circulated by some in the Breslov community, which calls on the government to bring the kever to Eretz Yisroel. In an article published by the ‘Maayanei Hayeshuah’ organization, Rabbi Aviner writes: “Is Rav Nachman a lesser (man) than many gedolei Yisroel whose bones have been transferred to Eretz Yisroel? Of course not! He is more so, because many times he said that his true place was in Eretz Yisroel.”

Rabbi Aviner claimed that Rav Nachman had desired to be buried in Eretz Yisroel, “and if the will of Rav Nachman was that people would come to visit his kever, of course his will could be carried out with more enthusiasm in Eretz Yisroel.”

Regarding the issue of the transfer of kevorim, which carries many halachic shailos, Rabbi Aviner said that if a kever is transferred to Eretz Yisroe, the move is considered a mitzvah.

He explains that according to the Rambam, kevurah in Eretz Yisroel accomplishes kapara for aveiros of the niftar, and thus “Rav Nachman will benefit from this.”

In conclusion, Rabbi Aviner recommends that people sign the petition, and explains that the move “will also save one from leaving Eretz Yisroel for an impure land, which is known as a halachic problem.”

He adds, “It will also save the wealth of Eretz Yisroel, which can be given to tzedaka, which saves lives.

The “Petition of Millions” calls on the government to import the kever to Yerushalayim as part of the “fulfillment of the prophecy of world peace and to assist the arrival of the geulah.”

According to the petition, the importation of the grave will bring salvation to the world in the fields of security and economics, and will prevent the occurrence of a third world war.

  1. The Rebbe picked to be buried in Uman to elivate the souls of the Jews of that town that were murdered. Going to Uman is an important rite of a Breslover, the struggle getting to Uman is opart and parcel of the trip.

  2. The move to Eretz Yisroel would be a great thing. A lot of the Rabbonim were becoming very concerned regarding the huge crowds being Oleh Regel to Uman each year!
Like Rabbi Aviner said, it would also save a lot of Yiddisha gelt from being wasted.

  3. n na nac nach nachm nachma nachman – Nachman Me’aretz? This “psak” messes up the whole song and is therefore invalid.

  4. Many things can be said about Uman thing.
Bekitzur, Uman is in Cherkassy(where is Yiddishe community–in the pits, r’l)district of the so-called “failed state”, known as “Ukraine”.
“Impure land” is the combination of the worst of Amsterdam with the worst of Kalcutta, plus antisemitism on the state level.
Rabbi Aviner is on the point…

  5. Rav Nachman chose to be buried in uman. We are not smarter than him in any way so we cannot decide what he wanted for him, especially that he chose uman in order to be with and elevate the martyrs that were buried there.
Moreover, Rav Nachman writes that the place where a tzaddik is buried has the same level of holiness as eretz Yisrael, so he’s fine where he is. For cynics to this point, the chazon ish said the same of radin because of the chafetz chaims presence.

Let’s not try to be smarter than our tzaddikim. Let’s just try to connect to them with simplicity…

Thank you Hashem for connecting me to Rav Nachman!!!
