romney-santorum[Live updates below. 1:53 a.m.] Iowa – 10:35 p.m. EST: GOP presidential candidates Rick Santorum, Mitt Romney and Ron Paul are in a three-way race for first place in the Iowa caucuses – the first contest in the 2012 caucus and primaryseason – early results show.

With 49% of precincts reporting, Santorum, a former U.S. senator from Pennsylvania, had 24% of the vote. Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, also had 24% of the vote, and Paul, a U.S. representative from Texas, had 22%.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich was at 13%. Texas Gov. Rick Perry was at 10%, and Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota had 6%.

Early numbers from entrance polls – a sampling of Iowa voters as they headed into their caucus sites throughout the state – showed a similar breakdown in support, with Paul, Romney and Santorum in a virtual first-place tie, and Gingrich, Perry and Bachmann in fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively.

In the entrance polls, Paul showed the strongest support among voters aged 17-29, while Romney was the preference of those 65 and older. Strong support for Santorum was expressed among those 45-64.

Update: 10:57 p.m. EST: CNN reports that with 78% precincts reporting, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney are virtually tied in the Iowa caucuses.

Update: 11:09 p.m. EST: With 89% of precincts reporting, Romney has 27,101 votes (25%), Santorum has 26,976 votes (25%), and Ron Paul has 23,155 votes (21%).

Update: 11:17 p.m. EST: With 92% of precincts reporting, Romney has 27,830 votes (25%), Santorum has 27,817 votes (25%), and Ron Paul has 23,737 votes (21%).

Update: 11:25 p.m. EST: With 93% of precincts reporting, Romney has 28,049 votes (25%), Santorum has 27,977 votes (25%), and Ron Paul has 24,144 votes (21%).

Update: 11:44 p.m. EST: With 96% of precincts reporting, Romney has 29,046 votes (25%), Santorum has 28,928 votes (25%), and Ron Paul has 25,108 votes (21%).

Update: 12:09 a.m. EST: With 97% of precincts reporting, Romney has 29,210 votes (25%), Santorum has 29,173 votes (25%), and Ron Paul has 25,307 votes (21%).

Update: 12:39 a.m. EST: With 98% of precincts reporting, Romney has 29,625 votes (25%), Santorum has 29,584 votes (25%), and Ron Paul has 25,875 votes (21%).

Update: 12:49 a.m. EST: With 98% of precincts reporting, Romney has 29,944 votes (25%), Santorum has 29,926 votes (25%), and Ron Paul has 26,182 votes (21%).

Update: 1:53 a.m. EST: With 98% of precincts reporting, Romney has 29,968 votes (25%), Santorum has 29,964 votes (25%), and Ron Paul has 26,186 votes (21%).

  2. what do you have against santorum just because he is the best canidate out there it doesnt mean you have to put him down by putting up romney remember do you really want romney care???!!!

  3. Um, Shmeel, I don’t live in Massachussetts, wo why would I have Romneycare? Have you listened to what Romney has been saying the entire cycle about repealing Obamacare? And who put down Santorum?
